The Importance of Embroidery Equipment in Driving Embroidery Quality

The Importance of Embroidery Equipment in Driving Embroidery Quality

At Say it in Stitches, we go to extremes to make sure that every piece of embroidered apparel that leaves our factory meets our standard of “superb quality embroidery”.  Our world view, our company culture, our clientele, and even our competition do not allow us to operate in any other way. And in a highly competitive and overcrowded market of 15,000-20,000 contract embroiderers nationwide, it is one of the ways in which we set ourselves far apart from the rest of the pack.  This is how we have developed a national following of loyal embroidered apparel distributors who invest their trust in us and know that when they send a job our way that they can be at peace because their customers will be delighted with the quality of the finished product. No more embarrassing moments with your clients, no more expensive mistakes.

It is common knowledge within the commercial embroidery industry that the primary determinant of embroidery quality is the digitizing. However, a very significant part of the quality equation is made up of a host of production-related factors. The most important of these factors is the quality, condition, and management of the embroidery equipment. The most skillfully digitized designs can be ruined or enhanced by what happens on the production floor.

Why should you care about the equipment we use?

The notion that equipment and tools affect the quality of the product is not lost on us. Part of what makes our service unique is the fact that we take this seriously.

At Say it in Stitches we use nothing but the best Tajima equipment, considered to be the “gold standard” within the industry. Our computer numerically controlled (CNC) equipment allows for very precise and minuscule frame movements of fractions of a millimeter, which in turn allows us to create designs with intricate details, including beautiful small letters. Our machines can have either 12 or 15 needles, which means that we can produce embroidery with a wide variety of color variations, including one of the “holy grails” of embroidery: smooth, gradient color transitions–something that most embroiderers do not even attempt. We have machines specifically configured for flat surfaces (e.g., shirts, jackets, towels) and machines that have been configured and optimized for hats, including puff embroidery (an area of expertise for us).

Even with the best equipment, maintenance and proper calibration are critical to the end result. Many wholesale embroidery factories will run their equipment to ruin in order to avoid additional costs. At Say it in Stitches we maintain a strict regimen of preventative, on-site maintenance. Machine parts routinely wear out, causing increased tolerances and variability, which in turn adversely affects the precision and crispness of the embroidery. Not to mention downtime, production delays, and additional production cost which ultimately affect pricing. Apart from daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance protocols, every 6-8 months we dismantle and refurbish out machines with key wearable parts. Our employees are carefully trained to monitor and adjust thread tensions, needle sharpness, machine speeds, and a host of other factors that have subtle but important impacts on embroidery quality. It’s all part of our deeply held quality ethic.
